Lamar Cardinal Classic Day Two Update

Texas Southern 10, Northern Colorado 9

BEAUMONT, Texas– Jasmine Smith's three-run home run highlighted a four-run seventh inning that powered Texas Southern to a 10-9 win over Northern Colorado during Saturday action in the Lamar University Cardinal Classic.

At the time, Texas Southern trailed 7-6. Kelsey Riley laid down a bunt single and Domonique Tello drew a walk, setting the stage for Smith. Chanler Powell added a RBI single later in the frame. Northern Colorado added two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Texas Southern staved off a potential rally.

After falling behind 2-0 thanks to a RBI sac fly by Erica Dick and solo homer by Lauren Paige, Texas Southern claimed its first lead during a three-run third inning. TSU got an RBI popout by Kreola Moore, and Destiny Chavarria reached home on a wild pitch.

Tello scored thanks to an error. Texas Southern added a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but a three-run fifth inning by Northern Colorado during which Paige hit her second home run, this one a two-run shot, left the Lady Tigers trailing until the final inning. 

Tyra Williams picked up the win for Texas Southern despite allowing four hits and two runs in 1.1 innings. TSU starter Jasmine Fulmore gave up 10 hits and seven runs (six earned) in 5.1 innings.
The teams combined for 24 hits in the game. Chandler Elsner took the loss for NCU, issuing 10 walks and allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits.

Smith was 3-for-3 with four RBI. Tello was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
  
Lamar 7, Texas Southern 3

BEAUMONT, Texas – Texas Southern fell 7-3 to Lamar during Saturday evening action in the Cardinal Classic.

Texas Southern drew first blood thanks to a RBI single by Destiny Chavarria in the second inning. Lamar responded as Texas Southern Lauren Rodriguez allowed three runs to the Lady Cardinals as Kelly Meeuswen, Maddy Myers and Ashley McDowell each collected a RBI.

TSU took advantage of errors to nab two runs, but Lamar took control of the game by scoring four unanswered runs combined during the third and fifth innings. Jasmine Smith was 2-for-4 for TSU, and Kierra Patton also had a RBI. Rodriguez got the loss, going 4.1 innings and giving up six runs on eight hits while striking out four.

Brittany Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with two runs for LU.
