Longtime TSU Head Trainer Harvey Announces Retirement

HOUSTON- For the past four decades there's been one constant presence within the Texas Southern University Athletics Program.

Respected as one of the true pioneers in the field of athletic sports medicine, TSU's John "Doc" Harvey has been that constant presence on the various sites of competition for Tiger and Lady Tiger sports teams.

After an amazing 41 years of service Harvey has announced his retirement from the university effective at the end of this month.

"I want to thank Texas Southern University for providing me with a place that I could work and learn in this profession," said Harvey. "This has been a great time for me and I'm extremely happy with all of the positive things we've been able to accomplish. I've had the opportunity to serve as a mentor and the lives me and my staff have been able to impact is truly a blessing."

Harvey's legacy at the university can be felt each time someone attends a TSU sporting event. It's through the efforts of Harvey and his staff that countless numbers of student-athletes have overcome injuries and physical setbacks during their respective playing careers.

"Our job as athletic trainers is to provide quality service to our student-athletes while taking steps to prevent injuries and relieve their pains," said Harvey. "The sports medicine program here will continue to run at a high level in my absence as a solid foundation has been laid for it to continue to flourish and grow."

Texas Southern Athletics has announced plans to name the training room located in the HPE Arena in honor of Harvey and his efforts over the past forty plus years.

"Doc Harvey is truly a legend in the field of athletics sports medicine," said TSU Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Charles McClelland. "The impact he has made within our sports medicine program can be seen on a daily basis. He is a tireless professional and an individual that has made numerous sacrifices for the good and wellbeing of our student-athletes here at Texas Southern University."

An event celebrating the retirement and legacy of Harvey will be held on campus in July. For the latest breaking news regarding TSU Athletics please continue to visit www.tsusports.com.
