HOUSTON- Deverell Biggs made 9 of 11 field goals and 8 of 9 free throws for a career-high 27 points to lead Texas Southern to an 88-78 victory over Southern on Saturday night.
Texas Southern, which clinched the SWAC regular-season title, has won seven straight and will be the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament beginning Tuesday in Houston.
Madarious Gibbs had 15 points and Chris Thomas added 12. Malcolm Riley pulled down 17 rebounds for the Tigers.
TSU was up 55-41 at the break and stretched that to a 65-48 lead with 14:10 left. It was a great night for the men's basketball program as they said farewell to four seniors including Biggs, Gibbs, Nick Shepherd and Jason Carter.
TSU's Mike Davis has now won three consecutive league titles dating back to the 2012-13 season.
"This was a really great night for our program," said Davis. "I couldn't be prouder of our team and our seniors.
Texas Southern will open the SWAC Tournament on Wednesday, March 11
th at 8:30 pm at the Toyota Center versus the winner of Alcorn State and Grambling State.
