Mike Moleta was named Texas Southern University’s Senior Associate Athletics Director in April 2010 and begins his 12th year at Texas Southern.
Moleta has played a huge role in the transformation of Texas Southern's academic success from both an Academic Performance Rate (APR) and graduation standpoint since his arrival to TSU. Using his knowledge of APR, Moleta successfully implemented those measures inside the TSU football program and helped the program record the biggest improvement in Football (FCS) APR during the 2011-12 season. Also during that span, the entire athletic department made history as every sport posted scores which met or exceeded NCAA APR standards in 2011 for the first time ever. Since then, the TSU Department of Athletics has been on the forefront academically as the department posted its highest APR score (974) in the history of the department in 2021 while also claiming the SWAC Academic Success Award for the 2021-22 Academic Year.
Under Moleta's watch, TSU has continued to raise its graduation rate yearly as the department posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 81 percent in 2020 which was its highest percentage since the NCAA started tracking GSR data in 2003-04. The percentage, which measures student-athletes that entered the university and received athletic aid in the 2013-14 cohort, continued TSU's upward trend in GSR as it marked the first time the department of athletics has surpassed the 80th percentile as 79 student-athletes graduated during that timeframe.
Prior to TSU, Moleta spent two years as the NCAA’s Associate Director for AMA at the national offices in Indianapolis from 2008-10. While at the NCAA, he served as a liaison to the Division I Committee on Academic Performance Subcommittee on Data Collection and Reporting. Moleta also managed the Academic Performance Program institutional data review process, where he was responsible for providing support to the data review team through institutional review and analysis, while creating processes and guidelines for efficiently approaching APP Data Reviews.
At the NCAA, Moleta also assisted member institutions in the development and submission of updates and modifications to its Academic Progress Rate Improvement Plans, while completing written assessments and evaluations of submitted APR Improvement Plans in accordance to established guidelines, criteria and rating categories. He also worked with college academic team members to develop strategies and tools for better disseminating the message of NCAA academic reform to member institutions, student-athletes, coaches, administrators and the general public. Moleta also oversaw the APR Adjustment requests submitted by NCAA member institutions by providing guidance to NCAA staff members.
Prior to his duties at the NCAA, Moleta was the Associate Athletic Director at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., from 2002-08. He spent a year at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., as the Associate Athletic Director from 2001-02. Moleta held down the Associate Athletic Director position at Southern Mississippi University in Hattiesburg, Miss., from 1995-01. He also served as Southern Mississippi’s Assistant Director of Compliance from 1998-01. From 1995-98, Moleta was a student assistant to the athletic director at Southern Mississippi from 1995-98.
Moleta has served as a staff liaison the NCAA Division I Football Academic Working Group. He was a member of the Collegiate Athletic Business Managers Association as well as a member of the National Association of Compliance Coordinators. He was the chair of the University Athletic Compliance Committee. Moleta also became certified under the NCAA Second Cycle Peer Review Team.
Moleta assisted in athletic department preparations for the 1997 Liberty Bowl, 1998 Humanitarian Bowl, 1999 Liberty Bowl, 2001 GMAC Bowl and 2006 Motor City Bowl.
Moleta received a Bachelors of Science degree in Sports Administration from Southern Mississippi as an honors graduate. He earned his Master’s in Sport Management from Middle Tennessee State. He was the 1997-98 Sports Administration Distinguished Leadership Award winner at Southern Mississippi.
