Robert Powell

Robert Powell’s head coaching career at Texas Southern University has started as one of the most successful in TSU and Southwestern Athletic Conference history.

Powell took over as head coach in 1999. Since then, the Lady Tigers have won the SWAC Championship in three straight seasons and has had one runner-up finish. His team won back-to-back SWAC Championship Titles in 2005 & 2006.

Powell has coached nine All-SWAC bowlers and one SWAC Most Valuable Player. He has bowled in the Lollipop League for 10 years and holds a Team USA Bronze Certification. Powell belongs to the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBA). He was the first African-American coach to vote for NCBA Female All-American.

Along with his duties as head bowling coach, Powell is a counselor with the Educational Opportunities Center, on the campus of TSU.

He is a 1996 graduate of TSU in Social Work and is currently working on his master’s degree in guidance and counseling.

Powell is married to the Toni Harris-Powell.
