Texas Southern's postseason run came to a close Friday morning as the Tigers dropped a 2-0 decision to Southern University in the SWAC Tournament elimination bracket final in Gulfport, Miss.
The Tigers finished the season with a 30-12 overall record after a tightly-contested pitcher's duel at the Gulfport Sportsplex.
Junior pitcher Zaria Turner turned in another strong postseason performance, allowing only five hits and two earned runs while striking out six over six innings.
Texas Southern threatened in the sixth inning after singles from Jordyn Talbert and Destiny Menchaca put two runners aboard with one out. However, Southern escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play to preserve a 1-0 lead. Southern added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after Asia George tripled and later scored on an RBI groundout by Katiana Maldonado.
Texas Southern mounted one final rally in the seventh as DaNia Durr doubled to right center and KateLynn Cooper drew a walk, but Southern pitcher Aaliyah Zabala returned to record the final out and secure the shutout.
Durr led the Tigers offensively with two hits, while Talbert and Menchaca also recorded hits for TSU.
