Softball Moves To Semifinal Round Following 3-0 Shutout Over Alabama State

GULFPORT, Miss. - Zaria Turner pitched a one-hit shutout while Destiny Menchaca and Kylie Wilson both had two hits and an RBI as TSU claimed a 3-0 win over Alabama State in the second round of the SWAC Tournament.

TSU once again set the tone early in the second inning as Penelope Saenz drew a two-out walk followed by Jordyn Talbert's double. Saenz would score on the throw for a 1-0 lead. Kylie Wilson walked and Menchaca's RBI single brought home Talbert for a 2-0 margin.

TSU starter Zaria Turner cruised on the mound until the fourth as ASU led the inning off with a single, but Turner forced a strikeout immediately after.  The leadoff runner was called out for leaving early, but a fielding error and an ASU walk moved the go-ahead runner to the plate. However, Turner pitched herself out of the jam with an inning-ending strikeout.

TSU added an insurance run in the fourth as Katelyn Cooper drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position after a sac bunt. Talbert drew a walk, and Wilson drove in pinch runner Amerie Martin to lead 3-0.  Turner would retire the next nine batters to seal the win.

Turner struck out six while allowing only one hit and a walk. The top of the lineup in Wilson and Menchaca both had two hits and an RBI, while Talbert added a hit.

TSU finds itself back in the semifinals of the SWAC Tournament without a loss for the first time since 2018. They'll face Florida A&M at 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon for the right to advance to the title round. The teams have met once in the tournament for the past two years. TSU also won its 30th contest, which is the most since 2014.
