Texas Southern split its doubleheader with Southern University on Friday at Memorial Park.
TSU 1, SOUTHERN 0
Zaria Turner threw a three-hit shutout as Chiara Pryor scored the lone run as TSU won game one 1-0.
Both pitchers kept the opposing offenses on edge until the fifth as Pryor doubled to left field with one out. Jade McQueen executed the perfect bunt in between first and second base, and Pryor aggressively beat the throw for the game's first and only run. Southern attempted to answer in the sixth with a runner on second and one out, but Turner logged a strikeout and a foul out to the catcher to end the inning. Turner pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to end the game as she struck out seven on only three hits.
TSU had five hits offensively on the afternoon as McQueen had the lone RBI.
SOUTHERN 7, TSU 5
Southern jumped out to a big lead early and held off a late TSU rally as they won game two 7-5.
Southern belted a three-run homer in the first for an early 3-0 lead and crossed three more home in the second to lead 6-0. TSU finally answered in the third as Kylie Wilson's fielder's choice led to Chiara Pryor scoring followed by an SU error which led to Jade McQueen and Wilson scoring for the 6-3 margin.
SU led the seventh off with a double but Wilson rebounded with two consecutive outs as the leadoff runner remained on third. However, a critical infield error on a potential inning-ending groundout with two outs led to the runner scoring.
TSU attempted a late rally as Destiny Menchaha led the inning off with a single followed by Asia Peart's walk. Wilson hit a one-out single followed by Marisa Perla's walk to lead the bases. Katelynn Cooper hit a hard ball to left for a sac fly, and the SU defense avoided a potential TSU tie on Karisma Garcia's shot to right field by catching the ball despite both outfielders colliding with each other.
Wilson finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. She also went the distance with a strikeout over seven innings.
The series concludes on Saturday at 10 a.m.
