Tigers Return Home for High-Stakes SWAC Battle vs. Southern

• The Texas Southern women's basketball team is back in action for a conference home match up against Southern University Thursday Feb. 12 at 6 pm. 

•Texas Southern and Southern University series dates back to 2012, with Southern holding a 22–8 advantage across 30 matchups. The Jaguars have taken the last two meetings, including the most recent contest on Jan. 3, 2026, where TSU fell 64–45 in Baton Rouge. Tigers have produced notable wins throughout the series—most recently a 55–51 victory on Jan. 4, 2025, and historically their largest margin of victory came in a 59–45 win on Jan. 2, 2016. Texas Southern's longest win streak in the series stands at two games (2017), while Southern's longest stretch reached six straight (2012–2014). The Tigers enter this matchup looking to snap a two‑game slide and build on competitive efforts that have defined several of the most recent meetings.

• Head Coach Vernette Skeete enters her fourth season at TSU. Last year, she guided the Tigers to a 14–4 SWAC record, finishing tied for second place and reaching the SWAC Tournament semifinals, a dramatic turnaround from her first two seasons (9–49 overall).

• Under Skeete, TSU earned its first‑ever postseason appearance, hosting a historic WNIT game at TSU and advancing to the second round before falling to Louisiana Tech.

•The Lady Tigers currently have the number one scoring offense in the SWAC (66.9).

• Daeja Holmes leading the Tiger offense, averaging 11.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game across 14 outings this season. Aaliyah Henderson is contributing 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. These experienced guards anchor TSU's offense and leadership unit.

• Maci Quiller, the lone returning letterwinner, adds 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Taliyah Logwood 10.4 ppg and Lauren Perry 6.8 ppg bolster bench production.

• Texas Southern continues to set the standard in the SWAC, entering this week ranked No. 1 in the conference in four key statistical categories. The Tigers lead the league in bench points per game (27.4), providing unmatched depth, while also topping the SWAC in rebounds per game (40.3) and scoring offense (67.1). TSU additionally ranks first in three‑point attempts per game (21.9), showcasing the team's confidence and aggressiveness from beyond the arc.

• The Jaguars are led by head coach Carlos Funchess. Funchess is entering his seventh season as the leader of the Southern University Women's Basketball program. The 2022-23 season ended on a high note with the Lady Jaguars in California for the NCAA Tournament and second appearance under Coach Funchees leadership. The Jaguars won their second SWAC Tournament title in four years by defeating UAPB

• TSU was picked to finish fourth in the SWAC Preseason Poll.

• Southern University was picked to finish 1st in the SWAC Preseason Poll.
