HOUSTON — Texas Southern put together several strong stretches and saw multiple players deliver standout efforts, but a late surge by Alabama A&M proved too much to overcome in an 81–63 setback Saturday afternoon at the H&PE Arena.
Despite the final margin, the Lady Tigers showed resilience throughout, highlighted by a balanced offensive attack and a fourth‑quarter shooting burst that saw TSU hit 71.4 percent from the field in the final period.
Ayanna Jackson anchored TSU with a steady 12‑point, 8‑rebound outing, giving the Tigers a spark on both ends. The Tigers also received a major boost from Daeja Holmes, who scored 12 points—including a pair of timely 3‑pointers—and dished out four assists. Maci Quiller added eight points, including five in the fourth quarter as TSU made its strongest push.
Texas Southern controlled the glass for stretches, finishing with 19 second‑chance points behind relentless offensive rebounding led by Jackson, Lewis, and Quiller, who helped TSU convert 14 offensive boards into scoring opportunities. The Tigers also outscored Alabama A&M in bench production, 32–13, showcasing the depth and energy of TSU's rotation.
Defensively, Aaliyah Henderson recorded a team‑high five steals, frequently disrupting the Bulldogs' rhythm and helping TSU generate 12 points off turnovers. The Tigers' defensive pressure was especially effective early in the third quarter, where back‑to‑back baskets from Henderson and Jordyn Marshall trimmed the deficit to five.
Alabama A&M ultimately pulled away behind a balanced scoring effort, but TSU refused to fade, closing the game with a 21‑point fourth quarter—its highest scoring period of the afternoon.
Texas Southern returns to action next week as they head to Prairie View Saturday Jan. 31 to face the Lady Panthers at 2 pm.
