TSU rallied back for a key SWAC West win as Lanay Carr's walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave TSU a 6-5 win over Southern University on Friday.
Â
Karisma Garcia's home run over the left field fence gave TSU an early 1-0 lead in the first but the Jaguars jumped ahead 2-1 after the third after loading the bases. The lead was brief as Angel Morales' sac fly scored Pam Richardson in the third for the 2-all tie. TSU would move ahead in the third as Marisa Perla doubled and eventually scored on Ja'Lynn Swiney's RBI double.
Â
An error by TSU allowed SU to tie it in the fifth at 3-all. In the seventh with one out, a TSU fielding error followed by a single put two Jaguars on base. Pitcher Maren Berger forced a groundout for the second out but SU moved ahead by two runs on a two-out RBI double.
Â
TSU's Paris Johnson beat out the throw at first to open the bottom of the seventh and stole second with ease. Richardson became the tying run on base after drawing a walk which set up Karisma Garcia's two-RBI double to knot the contest at 5-all. Two batters later, Lanay Carr singled home the winning run as pinch runner Madison Griggs scored from second.
Â
Johnson finished 3-for-4 while Garcia was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Berger struck out six to earn her ninth win of the year.
Â
The series concludes with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Memorial Park. At the end of Saturday's games, TSU will honor nine seniors.
