PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Texas Southern University women's basketball team endured multiple nine-point deficits in the first quarter and battled through a see-saw affair with Prairie View A&M University before running out of gas early in the fourth quarter to complete their season after 65-57 loss.
Taniya Lawson stamped her name as a player to be reckoned with in the future alongside Micah Gray as both are outstanding freshman and have high ceilings for their talents to rise to.
Lawson broke individual single-game bests including points (24) and field goals made (10) as she helped the Tigers battle back from early deficits of 9-0, 11-2 and 13-4 before closing out the first quarter only tailing 15-14.
Gray would give TSU its first lead of the game on a three-pointer with just eight seconds gone in the second quarter.
Multiple ties and lead changes ensued with neither team jumping ahead by more than four points throughout the second stanza.
After seeing the third quarter being an almost a mirror image of the second and the score knotted at 44-44, PVAMU (15-14, 12-6 SWAC) used a 9-2 run in the first 1:46 of the fourth quarter to gain a seven-point advantage that would not be relinquished the rest of the night.
Gray contributed 16 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Diana Rosenthal led PVAMU with 23 points to go along with Kennedy Paul's 15 points.
