ARLINGTON, Texas – TSU's quest for a SWAC Bowling Championship fell short at the 2023 SWAC Bowling Championships on Saturday in the first round.
Seeded fourth entering the tournament, the 2023 tournament featured a new format which differed from its previous appearances as the SWAC adopted the Mega Match Format which is a best-of-three format that featured:
1. Five-person team match
2. Baker Total Pinfall
3. Best-of-seven Baker match play
TSU fell 897-857 to Florida A&M in its opener but rebounded with a 954-911 decision to force a third and final game. Unfortunately, FAMU claimed a 4-1 decision which sent TSU to the consolation bracket.
TSU drew Jackson State for its second match and fell by three pins in the opener (924-921). TSU regrouped and claimed a 911-854 win in game two but dropped a 4-1 decision in the deciding game.
Payton Trevino and Cassie De La Fuente both averaged 193.5 followed by Even Smith's 174.
Both De La Fuente and Smith were named to the 2023 All-SWAC Bowling Second Team for their efforts during the 2023 regular season.
