HOUSTON — Texas Southern women's basketball saw a late push fall short in a 68–54 loss to Alcorn State on Thursday evening inside the H&PE Arena.
Taliyah Logwood led all Lady Tigers with 21 points, adding nine rebounds and five steals in one of her strongest two‑way performances of the season. Malaya LeSueur provided a major spark off the bench, finishing with 11 points and a team‑high five offensive rebounds to help TSU win the battle on second‑chance points, 15–6.
The Lady Tigers opened the game with early momentum, taking a 4–0 lead behind baskets from Logwood and Ciara Brannon. However, Alcorn State responded with a 24–5 run to close the quarter, putting TSU in a 24–9 deficit after one period.
TSU showed resilience in the second frame, outscoring the Braves 16–13 and cutting into the lead with strong defensive pressure, including multiple transition scores from Logwood. The Lady Tigers continued to chip away in the third, highlighted by a 6–0 run and a buzzer‑beating layup from Logwood to enter the final quarter trailing 55–39.
In the fourth, Texas Southern made its biggest surge of the night. Back‑to‑back scoring plays from Logwood and LeSueur trimmed the deficit to 12 with just over eight minutes remaining. LeSueur controlled the offensive glass, helping TSU generate extended possessions. But each Lady Tigers run was met with a timely Alcorn State response, preventing TSU from getting within single digits.
Texas Southern dominated scoring inside, matching Alcorn with 36 points in the paint and converting 10 second‑chance baskets in an aggressive effort on the boards. However, the Lady Tigers struggled from the perimeter, finishing just 1-of-23 from three‑point range, while Alcorn State knocked down six threes to maintain separation.
Along with Logwood and LeSueur, Ayanna Jackson added eight points and five rebounds, and Maci Quiller chipped in seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
